Did you ever wonder what would happen if you lost your diploma, or your university was unable to verify your transcripts? For many Syrian refugees, this is their reality. Before the war, 20% of Syrians between 18 and 24 were enrolled in higher education, now that’s less than 5%. Without documents to verify their identity and lost educational records, many are unable to continue their education.

Blockchain technology is used to secure cryptocurrencies and keep secure accurate records of all transactions, but it has application far beyond. Anything that can expressed in code can be recorded and stored on the blockchain, including school transcripts and credentials. In order to access that information, a user only needs a private key, or usb drive to prove their identity. With this technology displaced persons around the world could maintain access to their records, even if they were no longer able to provide documents to verify their identity.

Record keeping isn’t the only way that blockchain could change education. The Institute for Blockchain Studies is already creating massive open online courses accredited with blockchain-based smart contracts. These types of online courses are accessible to anyone around the world, and have the potential to offer advanced learning, without debt.
